This is my first puppy and please don’t say ask the breeder, just give me some advice. He is a Brittany Spaniel, 12 weeks old and weighs 12.5 pounds. The food we selected for him is Natural balance. How much should we feed him and how often? Thanks

Unfortunately l am in another Country and we have different brands to you so what advice l am giving you l give to my puppy owners but this a scaled down version as they get Diet Sheets so they know to continue on with what the puppy has been eating and there will be no issues of the pup getting ill.
No!l will not ask you why you are not asking the Breeder but l am concerned and curious.
A puppy of 8-12 weeks is still on three meals a day and even a small fourth one.It is a baby it needs lots of nutrition and introduction to good food.Alternate between wet food,l think you mean canned food which l personally do not give often to pups but do odd occasions and some dry food.At 12 weeks your puppy’s milk or baby teeth are just starting to come down so you can give your puppy dry food as well.Personally l like to mix it with a little water and soak over night to make it a little mushy so pup does not break his teeth and than another meal can be just plain dry food without soaking as the pup has to get used to chewing.
Why do you not introduce him to some raw meat and meaty bones as he will have a ball with these. He will not be able to eat the bone but he can chew the meat off it.A little grated cheese and some blob of natural yogurt is appreciated and good for growing pups and adults too
Another good fluid is non-lactose milk and l guess you will find it in the long life milk section not the cooler section. It is full of calcium and the only milk a pup or dog can tolerate. At his age l would not give it to him past 18 weeks but it is nice as a cool drink instead of water which you must have available both inside and outside so he has access to it or knows where the water happens to be.
If you set a routine for the puppy you will find life much easier like a set time for breakfast, one for lunch, one for afternoon snack, one for evening meal and no fluids after tea but a nice dog biscuit is appreciated in his crate when you put him to sleep.
You have a crate do you not so puppy can sleep in it and help you house train or you call it potty train the pup?Line it with newspaper and you can put a small old blanket at the back so if he does something at night it will be on newspaper.
Even at 12 weeks l still give breakfast which is important for a growing puppy so think about what you are going to give him and the times.
As he gets older you cut down the time to twice a day.
This is a lovely breed and you will have loads of fun with him.
Can l suggest you go to a specialized site on the Internet re feeding and raising a puppy as there is much to know and learn and l am sure you have read loads of info and know what you are doing but every little bit helps.Any questions e-mail me.
Good luck!
Puppies usually need to eat more often than twice a day. I always fed mine at least 3 times every day. When I ate a meal, so did my puppy. It also kept her occupied while I was eating and kept her from begging, which was a big help! Buy a food that is specially formulated for puppies and look on the back of the bag for an exact amount and tailor it to fit her needs based on her weight gain/loss over the first two weeks. And of course, you’ll be increasing her food as she grows, so keep that in mind, too!
Read the bag….and then think about what you plan for your dog! It is SO tempting to give a puppy “treats” and a “bit” of what YOU are eating when he asks for it. If you want a happy dog…keep treats strictly for training and VERY special rewards. Do not give your dog “people food”.We eat way too many spices that are horrible for your dog’s body even though he may crave to have what YOU are eating. If he clears his dish really fast…offer one quarter cup more. If there is EVER unfinished food…pick it up and throw it out. Fat kills all our loved ones…not just dogs! Good Luck and have a WONDERFUL time!
If you look on the food bag it will tell you how much to feed them. If not give them what’ll they eat twice a day until they’re a year old. Then you can start him on adult food.
Puppies will not eat anymore when they aren’t hungry…or at least my puppies have always been that way.
What’s wrong with asking the breeder? That seems like an incredibly intelligent solution.
What does the bag say is the recommended feeding amount for a day? Half it, and feed half in the am, and half in the pm.
you should feed what the puppy wants to eat without eating too much. whether thats a cup or 1/2 a cup is up to the breed of the dog and how fast its going to grow. DO NOT GO BY THE BAG!
Look on the bag of Natural Balance. There should be a weight/age chart. Feed your pup 3 times a day…(here’s an example of what I did…6am, 12pm, and 5pm). Just take the amount that the bag recommends and divide by 3
you should feed him three times a day- morning, noon, and evening. You should also pour a little milk or water in the food to soften it up so its easier to chew.
1/2 to 3/4 in morn and nite but increse it as he gets older
one cup of food in the evening, and one in the morning
