I am a female, 54 years old, and weigh 300 lbs. My doctor says my heart is fine, but I was too obese to see the backside of my heart. I feel okay day to day, but I am just plain tired of being tired. I hear I would have a lot more energy if I lost weight. How much walking is recommended for someone with my stature?

Walking is a great idea, in small doses and when it isn’t too hot out. The best exercise for you would be something in a pool, however.
Low intensity exercise is pretty safe. The more intensity you use the more your reward but also the more risk.
Walk until you start to feel tired, and then keep walking a little longer. That’s really all there is to it. If you’re sweating, you’re burning calories. It’s not hard to do, the hard part is your diet. If you eat garbage, no manner of walking is going to lose wait.
Also, a treadmill is ideal because then when you get tired, you don’t have to walk home.
Start little by little. Even if it’s starting with 5 Min’s of stretching. My mom is 53, and she’s around 250. With her, I encouraged her to try to do at least 5-10 Min’s of any type of exercise a day. Once you get used to that, you up it by five Min’s. Balance your diet, and just do little by little. My mom’s starting to do better, I’m sure it’ll work for you too.
I would totally ask a Dr. or maybe you can go to one of these dr. websites where they answer your questions or maybe someone going through the same thing you are can give you a better answer. I would hate for one of us to tell you something to do and then you get hurt. Good Luck! I know you can do it! You just need someone with more experience to help you. If I had any advice to give you I would say what everyone else is saying- walking is good, but just gradually do it day by day.
I would stick to deep breathing, walking would surely kill you.
I’m not as old and I don’t weigh as much, but I was 265 pounds at a height of 5’6 and was only 24 years old. I began by cutting out a lot of foods so that I could naturally lose weight without exercising. I stopped drinking soda, and stopped deep frying my foods. No more trips to McDonald’s for me!
I found alternative foods that were healthy that I liked as much as candies and chocolate. I love yogurt, so the loss of chocolate wasn’t that bad.
Suddenly I was down to 250. I began to walk every other day, until I was tired. Not much, just a few blocks, never further than I thought I could walk home again. Do this until you realize you are walking further away from home every day and not becoming as tired.
It will be good for your heart, just remember you have to crawl before you walk. Don’t set out to walk two miles in a day, be happy with what your body lets you do now.
I’m happy to say that since February I have gone from 265 to 220 and that once a month I still enjoy one of those bad habits like a cheeseburger or a chocolate bar. Moderation is key.
I know how it is to be terrified to exercise because of your weight and fear of having a heart attack. Trust me! However, your doctor gave you the green light to go ahead and start walking, and that’s a great way to start an exercise program. Just start very slowly. Seriously, if just climbing one flight of stairs a day (or if you already do climb stairs – climb one extra flight each new week if you feel that you’re ready for that.)
You will be truly amazed at how quickly your endurance builds – even at your present weight.
This theory holds true for walking on the street. Walk one block, or if you live in the suburbs, walk a few driveways down the street for a few days or even a week or two, and then add in a little more at a time.
Good luck with it.
since it’s your first time walking just start with 15 minutes. you don’t want to overdue it, and the more your body gets used to the exercise the more you can increase the intensity.
Well the good news is that walking is the most natural and one of the lowest impact exercises you can do in terms of stress on your heart. Right now you should start out very slowly and do what you feel capable of. If that means walking for 5 minutes or 10 minutes at a time, then start with that. Gradually you can either work up to doing more at once, or doing 10 minute intervals throughout the day, and from there as your body gets stronger, you’ll be able to push yourself harder as you go.
If you are still concerned about your heart, is there any way you can get to a pool to do some exercise? If you don’t have a pool at your home, maybe there is a community pool or a therapy group or a fitness club that offers classes and access to a pool? That is nearly the lowest impact exercise you can do, but it will get you moving and can be a start, or a great companion, to your fitness routine. Whatever you do, start slowly and don’t get discouraged by not running a mile right out of the gate. Listen to your body and you’ll get stronger as you go. Just be sure not to ignore the food part of the whole thing or the exercise won’t be as effective. Good luck!
try swimming..it will allow you to move easier with less stress on the body is fun makes you feel great and is good cardio…start with just getting in and moving around, then move to walking back and forth until u can start treading water and eventually swimming laps…your knees will thank you for it…most local ymcas have good swim exercise programs and you would be surprised what you can learn on youtube and google…google the topics and watch a few videos on youtube…if you can afford a trainer or fitness coach thats a good idea as well they will be better to find a plan that works exactly for you… good luck and be sure to get lots of rest and be sure to change your diet to fit your new lifestyle for it will make almost a larger difference. once you get active walking a few days a week will be easy….if you cant get to a pool just start walking slow…and each time go a little further…its better to start a shorter distance than you can actually walk and build up to more then go too far early on……good luck
