I recently purchased an iphone along with the 15$ data plan. My question is, when im not in wifi areas, therefore using the 3G network, am i still being charged for apps such as facebook, skype, pandora even if they are idle? If my phone is in my pocket but i am signed in to these apps, is my data plan still being charged or is it only if the app is actually being used on the phone?

I just bought a SlingBox this evening to set up with my iPhone 4, pretty simple installation. The only thing  I noticed, and I sort of expected is its a little laggy on the 3G network. Does anyone else experience that? I was thinking maybe its only like that due to all the new activations and whatnot since usually my 3G is pretty speedy.

I’m new to the iPhones.  I know how to make my phone connect to my local wifi network but how can I connect to AT&T 3G network for data whenever I don’t have access to my wifi network?

I picked up my iPhone 4 today, thought it was great until after many tests againt my wifes 3GS and if I turn the 3G on on the 4, the internet, email, etc., runs like crap.  Very slow, sometimes times outs trying to load web sites. My wifes 3GS smokes it in every way using 3G.  If I use the Edge instead of the 3G, it runs 10 times better than the 3G.  Any one else having this issue?

I can connect to my WIFI at the house no problem.  However, the phone does not seem to surf the net at all.  To download apps like facebook, etc., i have had to disable the WIFI, and use the 3G network…  Any assitance would be highly appreciated…    I have DHCP, BOOTP & Static all set to “AUTO”.  I did that initially so that I could even connect to the WIFI..  now after connecting, phone will not browse..  I’m sure it is a setting.. just can’t figure that out…   Also if it helps I have a Motorola Modem/Wireless Router combo from Time Warner using Road Runner.

So i was running a few tests on the network speed on my iphone and noticed while I’m getting reasonable speeds, I’m getting very high Latency which makes browsing, VOIP and other apps take longer to respond to any data requests.   Currently running IOS4 on iphone 3GS   APP USED to test Speed FCC Speed Test

Ok so for those of you who have had issues connecting to WIFI HOTSPOTS.   If you get username and password make sure your I4 has the cellular data network turned on! It looks like it uses the regular cell network to push you to a diferent page to use the HOTSPOT and then gives you a connection.   I know. I know. Why would you shut down your 3G cell network connection right! Well some people may have been shutting it down or maybe just do not want to use up the 200 republic credits available to them for the month. So whatever the case may be. Just make sure you have the 3g network connection set to the on position so you can get your internet connection using the WIFI HOTSPOT and then shut it down again if you like, once you are using the HOTSPOT!

I need to switch the number attached to my brand-new iPhone4 without actually switching the phone itself. Does anyone know whether or not this is possible?   When I purchased iPhone 4 from an AT&T retailer yesterday, they opened a new phone line to attach to my new iPhone. They were supposed to transfer my old AT&T number, which I’ve had for six years, onto my new phone. I hadn’t upgraded since 2004, though, and my 2g plan was incompatible with the new 3g technology, so they couldn’t figure out how to migrate my number over to the 3g network and subsequently, to the iPhone4. I accepted having to get a new number because I thought it was the only way I could use the new iPhone (not to mention that I’d been waiting in line since 5:30 am and got the last phone in the store).   Later on, I found out from AT&T Customer Care that the store could & should have moved my original number over. They also told me it’s possible to fix this: cancel the new iPhone line and migrate my number onto the 3g network, then onto an iPhone.  Customer Care said that AT&T has a “Buyer’s Remorse” policy where you can cancel your contract within 30 days without paying the early termination fee. There is, however, a restocking fee for “returning” the new iPhone4.   My question is, can’t they just move my old phone# over to my same iPhone4 once they close the new line? I am not returning the phone, just applying a new number to it. What on earth does this have to do with “restocking”? Am I really supposed to get a different iPhone4 just to apply my old# to my current iPhone4 sim card? Does Apple have some kind of policy where you the store can’t wipe this phone and reprogram the sim card?   I’m going out of town next weekend and need to have my iPhone with me, and I’m afraid that if, for some reason, they can’t do the simple, obvious thing and just reprogram my current iPhone sim card, I’ll have to wait for a new iPhone4 handset in order to straighten this out. And who knows when they’ll have more in stock (without having to stand in line for hours all over again).   Does anyone know anything about how the new iPhone 4 sim cards work? Is it actually necessary to ‘re-stock’ my current iPhone, or is it possible for the AT&T retailer to just wipe it and re-program it with my original number?   Any advice would be greatly appreciated.   Thanks!

I’m not understanding why in the world of google, I cannot find ONE answer to our dilema.    My husband and I both own iPhones. His is 3G mine is 3GS.  We both use sbcglobal.net for our email accounts.     But the way it’s set up on my phone does not work on his and vice versa.      Solutions tried:  1) I tried turning the Wi-Fi off for him , but it still says Recipients email is incorrect or some other sending error blah blah. He can recieve email but not send.   2) So, we go into his iphone… Settings… Mail accounts… Everyone says to use:    * incoming: pop.att.yahoo.com (BUT … sbcglobal old users(?) was told to use pop.sbcglobal.yahoo.com(??) .    * Outgoing settings suggested by At&T:  smtp.att.yahoo.com (BUT again… sbcglobal keeps saying to use the s mtp.sbcglobal.yahoo.com settings).   WHICH is corrrect for an email address using ****@sbcglobal.net in the year 2010 with the latest iphone upgrades?       3) Now, on to incoming and outgoing port servers and SSL connections…. which is which for where? Again, i’m hearing totally different port and SSL on and offs.  * incoming:  pop.att.yahoo.com    * incoming Mail server – USE SSL is ON  * Authentication: Password  * SERVER PORT: 995  . Is this correct for our sbcglobal.net using pop/smtp (not imap)   4) OUTGOING   *  smtp.att.yahoo.com    * USE SSL OFF  * Authentication: Password  * Server port: 465 Is there a way this is not the users fault and it’s something on ATT’s network or the new iphone’s update or whatever causing problems??   My phone works fine. Sends, receives, using the pop/smtp att.yahoo.com settings, but i AM using my WI-FI at home. While my husband is at work, i’m assuming he would go between his netwrok at work and/or ATT’s 3G network (is this correct??)   The easiest solution on our iPhone would be to start from scratch…. ADD email account… Add yahoo… and go from there. BUT if we do that – we lose our email messages, received, drafts, sent, etc.   Is there a way to set this up so it works at home and office and we can keep our messages?!?   Thanx in advanced!!!

Hi,  I am a T-Mobile customer who just recently bought a iPhone 3G (as in own it, not subsidized). I have been using a 2G iPhone on T-Mobile for the past couple of months but its pretty much broken now so I had to buy a new one. I bought a 3G this time. I’m kinda upset because 3G doesn’t work on T-Mobile due to their different bands, so I thought I’d give this a shot even though I’m quite certain ATT hates new customers, especially ones unwilling to get into a contract. I would like to bring my iPhone 3G to ATT and use it on ATT’s 3G network without a contract and preferably without a credit check (because I have no credit). Is this possible? It sure is on T-Mobile. I’ve heard that if you don’t have credit ATT requires a deposit, which is fine, but I am NOT interested in a contract or another iPhone. I already have my 3G, I just want to bring it to ATT and use it on their network and since they don’t have any prepaid plans, I have to see what they do have.
