Upgrade to Iphone 4 but never activate it

Hi, All -

 

I have an original iphone which I am happy with. However, I want to upgrade to iphone 4 and give it to my friend as a present. Is it possible to upgrade online, get it shipped and when I receive it, never activate it? Just keep using my old iphone.

I went through similar posts on this forum and there seems to be 2 opinions people have: 1. i can do it and ATT wont do anything as long as i sign another 2 year contract; 2. if i dont  activate new iphone 4 within 30 days, ATT will charge me full price of iphone 4

 

Did anyone try this? I dont mind another 2 year contract but obviously dont want to get billed another 400 after I give the phone to my friend.

Did anyone back up old phone before acitvating new one

Just wondering if I should back up old phone  before I activate new one.  I want to make sure all apps and new apps downloaded will be transferred over.  I am thinking I will back up old one before activating  the new one.  any suggestions???

Apple did learn from past mistake

When 3G came out, didnt they release OS 2.0, update tunes and try to activate new phones on the same day (july 11, 2008 I think).    At least this year, they are doing itunes 9.2 on 6/16, OS 4.0 on 6/21 and releasing the phones on 6/24
