Right now I’m listening to Pandora on my iPhone 4 connected to a wifi network. At 1:03pm, my sent cellular data was 441KB and my received was 1.1MB. At 1:41, sent was 481KB and received still 1.1MB. Why has my phone sent 40KB of data over the past 40 or so minutes when I’m connected to a wifi network? I know I am connected to wifi correctly because I can turn off 3G on the phone and the music keeps on playing, emails keep on coming, etc. Plus, no additional data is being received through all this. Any ideas what is going on that cellular data is being used while I’m connected to wifi?

data sent to phone carriers while on wifi

I’ll be traveling from the USA to Europe for a couple weeks in the fall. I plan to get the international calling plan for the time I’m there and am considering looking into additional data plans. My questions are:   1. Will the navigation apps I have (like Google maps, and MapQuest) and hotel / restaurant / shopping locater apps (like Around Me and Urbanspoon) work in Europe? Some of them give me the impmression that they are focused on the USA. I don’t want to be in Paris and be told there are no restaurants. If I’ll need European versions, how do I get them? And which ones are worth getting?   2. I am grandfathered in on the unlimited data plan. Do I still have to pay for data usage in Europe? (I KNOW that’s a dumb question – why would ATT miss a chance to charge me? But, I still want to ask . . . just in case . . .)   I am willing to accept MODERATE additional expense. I’m so used to using my phone for almost everything, I don’t want to go cold turkey.   Thanks for any suggestions

I got a quick question. I currently have service with ATT and do not have any data plan. I do currently own a smartphone but had the phone early enough before ATT starts to require any data plan on any smartphones. Now, I am thinking of buying a iPhone 4 or 3GS (not from ATT or Apple) to use with my current plan. Can I do it? Would I still need to sign up for any data plan? Do I still need to activate my phone? Would my 3G phone SIM from my smartphone works with 3GS without any issue? I konw iPhone 4 uses MicroSIM card, can I go to ATT store and would they exchange my SIM to microSIM without any issue and requirement for any additional data plan or service?   I currently have ATT block my data plan and I spoke with them and they are aware that my current plan has such no data provision because I sign up the contract before they sstart requiriung any plan.   Any thoughts guys?

So I can’t find anything online that specifically addresses this.. Now that tethering has been allowed (I refuse to use the word added) with v4 of iOS,   will we be able to use laptops at att wifi hotspots if we have a Datapro plan with tethering…or does that still require another plan? (Last time I checked, iphone can not tether a wifi connection)   With all the concern over laptops bringing down the network, I would think that they would add that ability for free to take the stress off the cell network.. but that might be just too philanthropic for you know who…  considering that we didn’t get any additional data added for the $20 tethering capability.

Hi all,   I know I am eligible for the upgrade pricing, so not an issue.   I have a couple of questions I am hoping can help me out with.   1) I read that if you restore from a backup, all of your contacts, photos, etc. will be on the new device. However, because I am going from the iPhone 3G with OS3 to the iPhone 4 with OS4, will this work? I don’t want to lose all of the contact info, including photos, ringtones, etc.   2) If #1 is no, what would be the best method to transfer all of the contact info to the new phone?   3) Is AT&T offering anything to their customers if they want to trade in the current iPhone? I asked at the Apple store and they said they aren’t offering any type of trade in deal.   4) If, instead of trading in the old iPhone, I wanted to move it to an existing family plan line in place of another phone, would I just have to pay the additional data fee (I am assuming under the new pricing) or would the bill go up even further than the base data charges?   Thanks in advance!
