I have some real problems with how my tethering works. I have an iPhone 3GS on OS 4.1. My computer is a Dell running XP SP3. Generally, my service is Edge and not 3G. I can tether but I have two issues. If I call or receive a call I lose my tethered connection. When this happens I always have to reboot my computer to re-establish the connection. I can get around this particular issue by forwarding my calls to my wife’s phone, but it is definitely not the best solution. Also, if I lose my connection while tethering I have to reboot. This is a real problem due to the amount of time this wastes. I would not complain so much about just losing the connection occasionally, but having to reboot every time is a real issue. My cell service here is pretty bad, and there is not DSL or cable modem available. Is there a solution for this? I am paying for this, so I want it to work correctly. Is there some setting that I am missing on my computer or phone that would help?
iphone tether connection drops, iphone tethering drops, reboot by tetheringI havent had much luck finding any info on this, and I’m sure I’m not the only one going through this. I’m in the military and am about to embark on a deployment. AT&T does offer a service suspene free of charge and while I’m going to take advantage of that, I’m trying to figure out if I can still use Wi-Fi and the FaceTime feature while on my deployment. We will have Wi-Fi available at my deployed location as well. Â AT&T tells me no, as they claim the entire phone will be bricked. They could not point to a reference anywhere where it says this. Â Apple support says yes, that I can use Wi-Fi when abroad and with no cell signal. So which is it? For kickers, here’s what my own tests have found out: Â FaceTime works with Airplane mode on, Cell Data Disabled, and Wi-Fi enabled. Â FaceTime does not work with SIM card out and Wi-Fi enabled, though all the other apps do. Â FaceTime does work with SIM card out, Airplane mode on, and Wi-Fi enabled. (Weird to me.) Â Â Â I refuse to pay for cell service while I’m abroad and am not going to use it. If it wasn’t for the FaceTime feature that I find invaluable to use when I’m gone, I’d be using my iPod Touch in a heart beat. Â Anybody with knowledge on this topic? Thanks!
For a third party GPS app to function I assume you must be in an area with cell service, so if you are in the mountains in an area with no coverage will the map work? Most portable hand held GPS devices will work as long as you can get a satellite signal. I know the regular map that comes with the iPhone will not work without cell coverage.Â
