Greetings,

On the second day of using my iPhone 4, while away from the house, tried using Edge for the first time and got literally nothing. It would sit and spin and about half the time “server stopped responding” would pop up. It eventually did partially load a couple of pages but at such slow speeds as to be unusable. We’re talking 10 minutes and it’s still trying to load the Yahoo mobile page. In a side-by-side comparison with my friend’s first generation iPhone, his would load pages on Edge while mine sat spinning endlessly.

Spoke with an Apple genius on the phone today who had me reset the network settings (no effect) and restore the phone (no effect). Has anyone else had a similar experience?

They’re offering to replace the phone, but it’s going to be a hassle (long drive to the Apple store or dealing with shipping it back, etc.). I’m debating whether to just live with it. 3G is not available in my area. Although I don’t use Edge often, I don’t want it to be useless.

Any suggestions?

For what it’s worth, I thought I’d post my experience since it was horrible.  The Apple iPhone4 would drop 1/3 of my calls if I used my left hand to hold the phone (which I do half the time).  Tried the bumper – it was a little better, but would still drop calls.  The phone, even with IOS 4.0.1, would show 1 bar when it’s in my left hand, but it would still drop calls.  After battling with this for a couple weeks, hoping for a satisfactory response from Apple, I decided to return the phone.  Apple returned the phone with no issues.  I’m a happy camper again.  Thank you AT&T.   I think I’ll give that new Samsung Captivate a try…   Brian

I ran down and picked up the new iPhone 4 for my wife to replace her old 3g. I have to admit that next to it my 3GS’s screen looks blocky and coarse. Reminds me of trying to watch a standard tv after getting used to high definiton.   As for the signal problem we haven’t been able to replicate it. I touched the black lines on the bottom sides and held it there for 60 seconds but still had 5 bars. As a matter of fact the signal seems really great. While traveling outside of town this evening we went down in a valley where I lost service and hers still had 2 bars left and she made a call but mine couldn’t receive it.   Just wanted to share my experience. It took me 40 minutes to get in and buy the phone. Half the time was waiting for a CSR and the other half was waiting on them to activate it. At 7 this morning there was a line of around 100 people so I just left and dropped back in around 4pm at which time there were only about 10 people ahead of me and many were there for billing questions. Only saw 2 of them buy iPhones. I had really expected them to sell out. Sure made me feel good I didn’t stand it line for several hours for nothing. ;-)   I will have to say though that after playing around with it the screen is great but if you have a 3GS it’s not really worth the upgrade. If you have a 3G though run out and upgrade. I did try loading some web pages on wifi and the iPhone 4 was about 20% faster than my 3GS.

I pay 260 dollars a month for a service, where i cant even get service in my area well over half the time. I cant recall ever having a conversation without a dropped call, I pay 30 a month for 3G Internet service that doesnt even exist in my area and is highly unlikely i will ever get it, when verizon has 3G i can get right in my living room. ATT is upgrading the bigger cities, what about the rest of your customers who live in surrounding areas who pay just as much for their cell service. Also, I pay the highest monthly rate of all the cell phone company plans with the worst service according to JD powers, i dont mind paying hidden fees for a little peace of mind knowing that if my car breaks down and I am not in New York City or some other major metropolitan area that i can call for help. ATT needs a wakeup call for doing whats right, besides the whole Iphone platform is getting kinda jaded.
