The future is looking less than rosy for Apple’s iOS mobile platform, if new research reports by analyst houses Ovum and IHS iSuppli are to be believed.

Ovum’s second annual developer survey, released today, states that Android could replace iOS in terms of importance to developers within the next 12 months, and that momentum is growing behind BlackBerry OS and Microsoft’s Windows Phone.

According to Adam Leach, devices and platforms practice leader at Ovum and author of the research, some developers are starting to focus their efforts on web-based standards such as HTML5, which can be used to build cross-platform applications. However most developers are still using vendor-specific distribution channels, such as the Android Market, to deploy applications.

“A smartphone platform’s success is dictated not only by the pull of consumers and the push of handset vendors and mobile operators but also by a healthy economy of applications delivered by third-party developers,” said Leach.

“Therefore, it is important for all players in the smartphone ecosystem to understand the choices developers are making today and the downstream impact of those choices.”

iTunes leak suggests 'Automatic Download' over-the-air updates are coming in iOS 5

In the lead-up to this year’s WWDC, we so far know three things for sure: Apple will unveil OS X Lion, iCloud, and… automatic, over-the-air app updates for iOS 5, apparently. While searching for updates in iTunes, a MacRumors reader stumbled upon this page, which alludes to an “Automatic Download” feature that allows for wireless [...]

I updated my iPhone4 to iOS 4.1 and now I have this issue while texting where I would type a letter and it ends up choosing a letter close by… It doesn’t happen all the time but when it does it’s extremely annoying. i would have to kill the SMS app then reopen for a quick fix for it to only happen again hours later. I’ve tried restoring as new but only resulting in the same issue. any ideas?

I have updated my iphone 4 to IOS 4.0.2 On my iphone 3gs whenever i turned off the 3g the bars went to 1 then they went up again and 3g turned to E and same with turning on 3g the bars dropped to 1 and went up again and 3g turned on. But with the iphone 4 i turn off the 3g the bars dont go down to 1 and then go back up they just stay the same then the 3g turns off and changes to edge.. My point is why doesnt the iphone 4′s bar drop to 1 then go up ? Is this normal or a problem ??

I’m a first time iphone owner.  I just received my iphone 4 a few days ago and am so loving it.  There is a app I want to buy at the app store but it hasn’t been IOS4 tested.  I’d hate to waste my money on it but would really like it.  It is the highest purchased app in it’s catagory (hurricane tracking) but none of the comments are about iphone4?  Will it work?   TIA for any responses.

I recently upgraded to the latest iOS on both my wife’s and my own 3GS.  Ever since, we have been able to hold only 2 minute conversations with each other and anyone since the update.  We have have the phones for 6 months prior to the update without these issues (and we are making calls from the same places).  I am trying to figure out if it is AT&T or if it the iOS update.   I am asking to see if anyone else has the same issue – good reception/connection verified and then poor reception after installing the iOS4 update.  If you have the same issue, please confirm so that I can pursue a fix from the responsible business (AT&T or Apple).   Thank you, Punky

Hey guys, Has the skype app been updated to work with ios 4 and run in the background? I’ve just recently downloaded and mine isn’t running in the background. Just wanted to make sure I wasn’t missing something. I know when apple did the keynote it was running in the background. Was this just for demo purposes only and the update hasn’t been released to the public yet?

Anybody else having trouble being able to use Emoji’s in your text messaging? They are there when I “search Iphone” (when you swipe to the left on homescreen)…I’ve been copying and pasting my emoji’s to my Messaging because I like to use them…just wondering why I don’t see the “world” icon on the keyboard in messaging?
