Stream iTunes Library to iOS 4.3 Device through Home Sharing

Using Apple Home Sharing with iPhone, iTouch, and iPad

Home Sharing was first introduced to the iTunes community in version 9, and since then it has become a key part to many different Apple products, allowing seamless streaming of content between devices on the same network without needing to sync.

The newest devices to join the collection of Home Sharing ready devices are the iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. With the release of iOS 4.3, all these devices are now able to stream content without needing to sync and bog down their smaller memory capacities. The process of enabling a device to utilize Home Sharing can be a little confusing, so here is how to get it running on your device with ease:

1. Enable Home Sharing on your PC or Mac iTunes:

In order to set up home sharing, go to the Advanced tab in the iTunes select menu and click on “Turn On Home Sharing.” You will then be prompted to enter your Apple ID and Password. Click “Create Home Share” and then “Done.”

2. Enable Home Sharing on your iOS 4.3 device:

Launch Settings on your device. Scroll through the Settings panel and select the iPod icon. There is a “Home Sharing” section in thisnew window. Here you enter the same Apple ID and Password as you used when enabling iTunes.

3. Start iPod app: Now that Home Sharing is enabled on both iTunes and the iOS 4.3, it is time to take it for a test spin.

  • Launch the iPod application and tap on the “More” tab.
  • There will be a new option titled “Shared.” Tap on this icon.
  • A new screen will appear with a list of the libraries connected through Home Sharing. Select the library you wish to link with (it may take a few seconds to load the library).

The new screen will look and function like the normal iPod app home screen, but it will be full of the audio, video, podcasts, and other files from the newly connected library.  Simply scroll through the library and select the file you wish to enjoy.

4. Switch back to normal library: In order to switch back to the devices original library, follow the first two steps of number 3. When the shared libraries screen appears, click on the library titled “My iPhone.” Now you have your basic iPod library reinstated.

And there it is: Home Sharing with iOS 4.3. This technique allows for easy streaming of files without having to sync the device or use large amounts of memory. There are a few things that can cause slight hang-ups if they are not accounted for:

1. The multiple libraries must be connected on the same network in order to stream the files.

2. The multiple libraries must be signed in with the same Apple ID, or else thee libraries will not  appear in the “Shared” folder.

Android or iPhone?

In the summer of 2010, the iPhone was most popular. Now 31% of consumers plan to purchase an Android device. Way back in the summer of 2010 — ages ago in mobile-phone technology time — a third of U.S. consumers who were planning to purchase a new smartphone reported a preference for the Apple iPhone. White iPhone 4 goes on sale Thursday

The white iPhone 4 can really, truly, finally be yours on Thursday. “The white iPhone 4 has finally arrived and it’s beautiful,” Phil Schiller, Apple’s chief marketing officer, said in a prepared statement. “We appreciate everyone who has waited patiently while we’ve worked to get every detail right.” Apple simultaneously dropped another major piece of [...]

White iPhone 4 by end of April

When we were at the event where the iPhone 4 was launched, the device was on hand in both black and white colors. The only version to come to AT&T was the black smartphone with the white one having some sort of undisclosed issues with production at the time. We later learned that Apple was having [...]

Edge equivalent speeds on 3g - possible hardware/firmware issue on mine?

Howdy folks – iPhone 3g, and I’m getting horrific slow data speed.  I don’t think it’s the network this time though.  Operational speed is not an issue here, I’m actually not all that disappointed with device performance, particularly when it’s 2 revisions back.     Granted, this screen capture is at 3 bars, but I [...]

iPhone 4 Picture send fails

When I try to send a picture on my iPhone 4, it says sending, then times out and fails.  Never used to be a problem until recently. by Warm ‘n Fuzzy I love making apple pies and eating them, and there is this party thing that i made apple pies for and i don’t want [...]

Hi, All –   I have an original iphone which I am happy with. However, I want to upgrade to iphone 4 and give it to my friend as a present. Is it possible to upgrade online, get it shipped and when I receive it, never activate it? Just keep using my old iphone. I went through similar posts on this forum and there seems to be 2 opinions people have: 1. i can do it and ATT wont do anything as long as i sign another 2 year contract; 2. if i dont  activate new iphone 4 within 30 days, ATT will charge me full price of iphone 4   Did anyone try this? I dont mind another 2 year contract but obviously dont want to get billed another 400 after I give the phone to my friend.   Thank you!

My friend has an unlimited iPhone data plan on his ATT family plan and has 8 months of his 2 years left.  He already switched to verizon for some reason and his plan is still going and he doesn’t want to cancel it.  I’m part of my own family plan (I’m on an iPhone 4. Shh, don’t tell AT&T) with data BLOCKED so I don’t accidentally get charged $250 for usage (again), unlimited messaging and the family minutes.  If I wanted to take over his unlimited data, what’s the best way to do that and would I be able to just add the $30 onto my account, keep my messaging and whatnot?  I want the iPhone unlimited, not the 2gb+tethering or anything like that.  Sorry if this is confusing, I’m willing to clear anything up. Thanks in advance

I want to take advantage of the Radio Shack trade-in sale this week.  I have a 3GS and plant to get an iPhone 4.  Is ATT going to hassle me?  Extend my contract?     And what will I have to do?
