Alrighty, so there was an issue with me getting an iPhone out here in Nome, AK a few months ago and I finally just broke down, shelled out 400$ (at the time!) for an iPhone 3g on ebay. Then I went and got myself a pre-paid gophone account and inserted the SIM and “poof”, problem solved… until my phone dropped out of my pocket and it got run over by a truck. Â Now I’m back in the saddle with a Palm-centro for the time being and I want the new iPhone 4… Â If you had not read my previous problem, I live in Nome, AK and I’m kind of stuck here. There is an AT&T “store” but it is not a corporate and there is NO WAY to get an iPhone 4 from this location. Â So I decided to give ol’ 1-800 number a try and see what the possibilities of me getting one now were! Â Problem Number 1: I do not have a personal computer (as my iphone served as both internet-connection and e-mail…thing) Therefore, if the comfirmation were sent, I wouldn’t be able to get to it until the next day at least, not a HUGE problem, but it is one nonetheless. Â Problem Number 2: Apparently I have “made too many failed attempts” with ATT and I have upset their “Risk Management” team who explained that my SSN would be blocked from all phone and online purchases through ATT. Â Problem Number 3: Like I said, there’s absoloutly no way that I can “get out” of Nome, AK and get my iPhone elsewhere (The closest corporate store is Anchorage and I’m not paying 600 Dollars to fly out to get a phone that, with the 500 Dollar deposit will cost 800 dollars!) Â Is there ANY way around this, I mean, REALLY? ATT has been good to me in the past (When I was younger and I was on my parent’s account) and now they seem to just want to discourage me from even trying. So — I’m in the same boat as some of you — I’ve been with AT&T a LONG time — since the original AT&T Wireless (yes, before even Cingular) — and my contract has been up for awhile. I’ve been drooling over the new android phones from Verizon and Sprint but I’m curious to see what Apple will do with iphone 4G on Monday. With AT&T throwing the wrench in — with the end of unlimited plans — I’ve been trying to see what I can do to keep my options open. These are…  1) Add unlimited iphone data plan now — even without an iphone — then get the new iphone 4g when it comes out (read this in a different thread) 2) Get an iphone 3gs now with unlimited iphone data plan then hopefully exchange with the new iphone 4g (if it came out within 30 days) through “buyer’s remorse”. Yes, there would be a 10% restocking fee plus $35 exchange fee… but I’m willing to pay it. This is counting on the fact that AT&T said that we can keep the unlimited plan — even if we upgrade to a new phone. 3) Forget iphones altogether and just get Palm Pre with unlimited data plan  Tonight — I stopped by my local corp AT&T store here in NOVA. I told him that I was thinking about option 2… he goes on to tell me that regardless of what I may have heard or read — he was told by his management that we can keep our current data plan — as long as the upgraded phone is the same one. For example… if I replace an iphone 3gs with another 3gs — I can keep it. But if I went from an iphone 3gs to an iphone 4g, no — I must choose from one of their new data plans. So, this throws another wrench into the whole mess. If what this sales rep is saying is true — then for folks that are trying to play the game to keep the unlimited data like me — we’re done.  With the EVO 4G launching on Sprint, Verizon offering Palm Pre with wifi hotspot option (tethering) for free — other carriers are starting to look better to me.  Thought I’d give the warning for those trying to lock-in their plans and get the iphone 4g. Hope the sales rep is wrong… but not sure.
I came across walmart’s website today to find that the 199.00 iphone 3gs 16gb I just bought at the AT&T store 1 week ago is $97.00 at walmart. I’m still under the 14day price match and 30day return policy. Â I called ATT store I purchased it from in PA and they stated that they cannot do anything at this time for another 1 to 2 days while the management have a meeting and this may be part of it. So I called the customer care hotline and asked them about the price. First they couldn’t find it and played dumb on the phone saying “I cannot find the walmart 3gs phone” until I gave her the Model number. I was then able to prove to them that walmart has it cheaper starting today. I knew they couldn’t do anything but wanted to bring it to their attention that I will be closing out the 2nd line on my account and reopening it and to expect no early term fee’s or re activation fee’s or anything like that. Â I’m hoping we get enough people on here and to have AT&T recognize this issue that WALMART is beating AT&T’s own customers to the punch of the discount and to do something about it. I guess I was wrong when I thought AT&T were the only ones to have control on Apple. Â Oh and the best part, it’s in stock and available in stores. walmart.com Model#: MB715LL/A
