Question about keeping/losing phone number (iPhone)

I purchased an unlocked iPhone abroad and I'm debating when to switch over to AT&T. I'll be out of the country for 4 months and would rather not pay for AT&T iPhone service that I won't use, but I was told that with an iPhone already in hand, I can go month-to-month--is that correct?  Moving from one question to another, if I go month to month and use the service until I depart, if I discontinue service for those 4 months would I still retain my number when I return, or is it lost from the moment I discontinue a running line of service with AT&T?  I currently am on a Verizon family plan that is quite cheap, so the worst-case scenario would be to just keep my number on this VZW plan for 4 months and pay much less (in comparison to AT&T) in order to keep the number for my return.   Thanks!  Message Edited by Adamy on 03-14-2010 09:22:30 PM

Existing customer considering an iphone

So I'm another frustrated current ATT customer who can't get the discounted iphone.  Here's my question: it's cheaper for me to cancel my current phone, then sign up as a new customer with ATT, is there any way I can request or keep my current phone number?  Message Edited by reyup on 03-02-2010 03:12:02 PM

Apple COO Gives No Indication That Verizon Will Offer the iPhone

Bad news for the AT&T haters and the Verizon fanboys.  Apple COO Tim Cook spoke at the Goldman Sachs Technology and Internet Conference.  In his remarks, he clearly downplayed the need for Apple to add Verizon .   Cook also touched on a subject that's been a sore spot for iPhone users--Apple's relationship with its exclusive U.S. service provider AT&T. iPhone customers dissatisfied with AT&T's service have been hoping that Apple would take on another partner in the U.S., but Cook's comments on the subject Tuesday are unlikely to add much fuel to that speculation (hardly a surprise since Cook called AT&T a "great partner" during last month's earnings announcement.)   On Tuesday, Cook noted the advantage of having a single-carrier relationship. Besides simplicity, dealing with one carrier allows Apple to "innovate and work with that carrier on a feature that would be difficult for multiple carriers to provide." Take Visual Voicemail, for example--a feature that Apple and AT&T collaborated on for the iPhone's initial release.   While having multiple carriers gives Apple the chance to sell more iPhones, that's largely the case in countries where carriers have what Cook described as "sticky" relationships with their customers, so that it makes sense to ink deals with more than one carrier.   In the top 10 markets for the iPhone, Apple has relationships with single carriers in five of them. Of those, three markets feature exclusivity agreements while the other two allow Apple to add other carriers.     "We look at each on a country-by-country basis," he added. Is 3G 16 GB a discontinued model?

I have been looking for this model for a while now but cannot find it on AT&T nor on the apple site. Is it discontinued? If I use a discontinued iphone model w/ AT&T will I not be eligible for a data plan? ie., I get this model from my friend, insert an existing post-paid SIM and start using it. Should I call AT&T to add the data plan assuming AT&T will not know that I have swapped the SIM card? Or AT&T will automatically add the data plan using the IMEI? Also, will it extend my contract by doing so? Kindly help. Thanks ! Message Edited by lent60r on 02-23-2010 08:30:49 AM

is "mobile me" guaranteed to work?

Suppose someone lost his phone or it got stolen. As soon as he gets home he goes online, logs in to his mobile me account and sees a list of all the places the phone has been at earlier that day. With the help of local law enforcement authorities it probably would not be hard to question the residents until the thief or finder of the phone appears. But what if that person removes the sim, restores the phone to factory settings, or simply turns it off before he gets home? Unless that's not the way mobile me works it seems that in that case mobile me would be useless. Does apple or AT&T offer discounted replacements or something similar if the phone is not recovered?
