but does she have to use the upgrade to buy the iPhone.  she is an existing customer, has had the upgrade for a couple of years i believe, just been waiting for the right phone and has now made her decision.  Her contract has been up also, so if she just signs a new contract will that save the upgrade???  I am on pre-paid and do not know enough about post paid issues to help her that much

Hi   I currently have 2 3Gs that I run on TMobile but I wanted to switch over to AT&T as I’m tired of being worried about accidentally upgrading the firmware and I actually want the 3G internet now.  I want to sign on a new contract but I would like to be eligible to get the white Iphone 4 once it comes out.  Has anybody hear of AT&T allowing an upgrade within a month or two after signing up or is there even an option like this?  I don’t have a problem signing a 2 year contract but just want to be eligible for an upgrade.  Thanks everybody.

I too am dealing with the same thing…been with AT&T forever.  Forced to sign another two year contract for my family plan in order to get the good rates and telephone deals.  I did lower my minutes because I was having so many rollover every month….but to lose them all when I sign a new contract seems grossly unfair.  I also had 5000+ minutes.  :womansad:

If I give my old iphone 3g to my son who has an out of contract line on family plan that is now month to month, will he have to have a two year contract to activate? Or if I give it to my daughter who is also on family plan but has a few months left on her contract, would she have to start a new two year contract?   In other words, does activation on an existing line always require a new contract–even if the phone itself is out of contract?

So let’s say you’ve been on contract for 16 months and you can’t get the discounted upgrade of $199 for the 16GB iPhone until March 2011, or the early upgrade price of $399 for the same phone until December 2010.   According to AT&T’s terms, if you were to cancel with AT&T you would get charged $325 minus $10 a month that you’ve been on contract ($160), totaling a $165 cancellation fee.   The question is could you get the discounted iPhone ($199 for 16GB) plus $36 activation if you cancel and rejoin AT&T? The total for all that would be exactly $400 (plus tax of course), the same price it would be to get the early upgrade price ($399)?   Let me break it down to clarify: Cancelation fee ($325-$160) – $165 Rejoin for new contract iPhone – $199 AT&T Activation fee – $36 Grand Total – $400   Is this even possible or does AT&T prevent people from doing this? This isn’t for me, in-case people are wondering, just trying to help someone else out. Their iPhone 3GS is almost inoperable and they can’t get any discount on anything and this is the last thing I could think of. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

My daughter’s iphone is cracked. Can I just buy a refurbished iphone from ATT.com and they’ll transfer her number to that? I know I have to re-sign a new contract, and I don’t care about that. I just want the same model (3gs) instead of upgrading to a iphone4. If this IS possible, do I just buy the refurb phone straight from the att website, then call att to transfer her phone # to this newly purchased refurb phone? So basically I want to “upgrade” to a refurbished phone, but no refurbs show up when I go through the ‘upgrade’ process. Or is that possible?

I got an iphone in January. I also checked if I could get a early upgrade and said something about 18 dollars. Would I have to sign a new contract? Would I have to pay an ETF or would the other contract just disappear. Thanks.

Have an iphone 3gs purchased in August 09, not available for full discount, but for $399 (+ $18 fee) I can upgrade to an Iphone 4 16g.  Meanwhile my early termination fee should be roughly $125 should I cancel my current contract.   Do I pay $399 for the new phone via upgrade and simply start using it..   ..or do I cancel my current contract for $125, then start a new contract for $199 (roughly $75 cheaper than the former method)   I plan on giving my 3gs to a friend to use with their ATT contract..   Q. A new contract would kill my $30 unlimited data plan obviously, would upgrading do that as well? Q. Would my friend be able to use the iphone if I don’t cancel the contract first? Q. My friend currently has the unlimited data plan, would using the iphone now force him to change that plan?

So, according to *639# I am not eligible for an upgrade without paying the early upgrade price.  Since my contract states my early termination fee is $175 (reduced by months paid), does anything stop me from paying the early termination fee and then signing a new contract?  Any way I can do this and still pre-order?   By my public school math, this would be $125 cheaper…
