Imagine Cup

GLOBAL – Take part in the Imagine Cup 2012 Windows Phone Challenge, which is sponsored for the first time by Nokia.

If you want to help end hunger, lift millions out of poverty, give children better access to primary education and combat diseases like HIV, TB and malaria – then this year the Imagine Cup is for you.

“There are 7 billion people on the planet and 1 billion people living in chronic hunger. This is a wake up call to the reality of the planet.”

- Jeffrey Sachs, Director of the Earth Institute speaking to the Imagine Cup 2011 Worldwide Finalists

The Imagine Cup has been challenging student competitors to present creative technology solutions to some of the world’s biggest problems for ten years. This year you can design apps specifically for Windows Phones, and win a Nokia Lumia.

In 2011 a team from the Palestinian Authority designed a game called Malaria Wars to raise awareness about one of the world’s most lethal and widespread diseases.  The game starts with ‘Captain Plasma’ fighting germs that are getting into the body through a hand scratch – only to discover a mosquito bite. ‘Mr. Brain’ then sends orders through nerves to check and protect the liver. When this fails Chloroquine is finally imported through the mouth to kill Malaria.

The Ibero Mexico team developed interactive activities, games and learning for children whose education had been disrupted through natural disasters, while an Italian team designed a game set in a medieval city that highlighted opportunities for recycling.

More than 350,000 entrants from 183 countries were whittled down to a few winning teams who met in New York for the Grand Finals where Microsoft unveiled $ 3 million grant program to turn some of these projects into reality.

This year finalists for the Imagine Cup will attend a final showdown in Sydney in July 2012 to see whose ideas will really change the world.

And now there are even better resources available if you want to take part. You can use the Nokia IdeasProject database to access more than 7,000 ideas for apps.

“IdeasProject is Nokia’s crowdsourcing service, used by all kinds of people with great ideas. For the Windows Phone Challenge, there are thousands of still un-realised ideas. The students can utilize them as long as they credit the community and the idea creator who inspired them,” says Pia Erkinheimo, Head of Crowdsourcing at Nokia.

Or you can get inspired by one of the eight United Nations Millennium Development Goals.

So, if you want to be part of history, develop apps for the fast-growing Windows Phone platform, and be one of the winning teams in Sydney, then register for the Imagine Cup today.

Android 2.3 Could Be Causing Problems With Nexus S

“Sprint, Samsung and Google are investigating customer complaints about problems with Nexus S smartphone connections and the deletion of photos taken with the devices, a Sprint spokesman said.” “We are aware of the connectivity reports being brought forward by a small number of Nexus S 4G customers,” a Sprint spokesman said via email late yesterday. Swap SIM between iPhone 4 and Original iPhone, data plan problems?

I have an original, aluminum back iPhone and an iPhone 4.  I am currently on the old-school data plan.  The $ 30 “unlimited” one you get for upgrading from a classic iPhone plan. I have a microSIM to miniSIM adapter that I know works, I’ve used it before. If I swap the SIM from the [...]

PUK Sim Card Lock Problems

Last week one of my friends was trying to change my passcode on my Iphone 3GS when he locked the SIM Card, after that I went online to the ATT website and got my PUK code to unlock it. Once I got it unlocked it worked fine until I had to turn off my phone [...]

I updated my iPhone to 4.1 the other day. It was working fine until today and now whenever I am typing a text or trying to do any other touchscreen features, it stops working. I can lock the phone, press the home button, and then unlock it and it goes back to working. What can I do to fix this? I doubt anything as it is likely an issue caused by the new update. If so where can I go to post about this issue, so that Apple sees the issue and fixes it at the next update possibly. I know they will admit nothing, but usually fix the problems they read on forums. Thanks for anyones help.

After switching from 3GS that I have never had problems with, onto iPhone 4, I keep running into the same problem. I keep getting “Cannot connect to iTunes”, “check your connectivity”, “app lost internet connection” etc all the time while I am indoors. Quite often my calls go straight to voicemail without the phone ringing. A speedtest app sometimes shows “0 kbps upload speed” or low (in single or double digits) download speeds.  Sometimes I get good speeds, but not too often.   I have got Apple to replace the phone thinking the problem might be with the particular device, but my problems continue. I do keep a phone inside the case.   Where do I go from here?

Apple finally admits that there is an issue with the antenna, so they give out free bumpers until 9/30 and then they’ll re-evaluate the situation. Now they announce just one week later after Jobs announced the white iPhone 4 would be available at the end of July that there’s further problems manufacturing the white iPhone 4, so it won’t be available until later this year. Go ahead and admit it Apple, you screwed up by pushing out a phone that has issues and now you’re trying to fix the problem without the public knowing exactly what is going on. We are not stupid, we can see the forest through the trees. You are going to do something over the next few months to fix these problems, yet you claim that no redesign of the iPhone is necessary. I’m not buying it and I bet most on here isn’t either.

Wondering if anyone can top my problems with Premier.   Ordered on the 15th like everyone. 12 noon PST. Got a confirmation email  but it had the wrong address on it. It said “NEW YORK” and I live in San Francisco.   I called to check, and the CSR said all addresses were correct, just an email glitch. My order is “Processing.”   Two days later American Express calls to verify a possible fraudulent charge. My order goes to “Attention” and stays there.   Fast forward to today, Tues the 22nd. Seven calls to Premier later and repeated promises that everything’s fine, my order finally goes back to “Processing!”   One problem: another error email from Premier.   I call to check, and apparently the text messaging plan I ordered with my phone DOES NOT EXIST. $20 unlimited texts, guess the system wasn’t supposed to offer me as it’s incompatible with the iPhone that I’m in the process of ordering!   Call yet again and apparently this too will be fixed. But after so many promises of “everything’s fine, don’t worry,” I doubt it. 50/50 odds my phone ends up with a hobo in NYC.   Anyone have a worse customer service experience? Would love to hear it to make me feel better.
