Ok, need to make one thing clear first, I purchased my iPhone in Columbus, Ohio but am now studying abroad in Wiesbaden, Germany until January, so I definitely need some help with this issue.

I was in Munich this past weekend for Oktoberfest. Mother nature decided to let loose the heaviest rain I’ve ever been in my entire life. I have my iPhone with me but am only using it as an mp3 player for my time here and it’s been in Airplane mode since I left the country a month ago. It rained so hard that water soaked my jeans and my iPhone inside my pocket.

The water mark never showed up. What I’ve noticed is corrosion in my iPhone dock. This was not noticed until Saturday evening. I’ll try and be quick with this description of everything. So, after going out to a bar to get out of the rain on Friday night, I never really used my iPhone other than to check the time. Yea the back of my case on my iPhone was a little wet, but the screen and everything else seemed perfectly fine until I started to head back to the hotel. The first problem that arose was my screen would automatically turn on (even if I turned off my iPhone) and this message would show up on the screen:

This accessory is not optimized for this iPhone
You may experience noise caused by cellular interference and a decrease in cellular signal strength.

Obviously, I became worried. Especially since the phone is in Airport mode and isn’t able to receive any cellular signal. I don’t even have my microSIM in the iPhone because I don’t want to risk picking up any roaming charges. I’m just trying to be safe about that. So since the iPhone wouldn’t turn off w/o it turning back on and this message popping up, I simply plugged it in to my laptop I had with me to charge it for the night, figuring that maybe having it plugged in and charging would possibly solve any problem.

When I plugged my iPhone into my laptop later on Saturday to try and load some photos up online from the day, it wouldn’t connect. I have tried multiple times to connect the iPhone to my laptop and it won’t work. When I got back in Wiesbaden on Monday, I tried plugging into my roommates laptop and it wouldn’t connect. It’s not an issue with my Macbook Pro or the cord, the problem is definitely with the iPhone. I have noticed corrosion in the iPhone dock and I’m certain that’s definitely a major issue.

I can’t contact Apple Support back in the States (they only accept calls from North American numbers). If I want to contact Apple Support here, an entire phone call describing my problem and figuring out a solution would cost a fortune on my prepaid phone (Apple Care here in Germany charges me 42 Euro cents per minute, and then I’m charged 15 Euro cents each minute by my carrier O2). So, I can’t (won’t) call them here. I went to a Apple retailer store here in my city and I was told if I wanted to repair anything, I’d have to pay 235+ EUR to fix the problem (my iPhone cost just over $200 back home, I’m not paying the equivalent of $300 for repairing the phone). There isn’t an official Apple store anywhere near me from my understanding so I can’t go and actually speak to someone.

Basically, I’m in a bit of a pickle and I need some help/advice/guidance/whatever. I personally can’t live w/o music when I’m traveling on weekends here and I love using my iPhone as an mp3 player, especially since WIFI seems to be pretty prevalent wherever I have been. I don’t see the wise decision in purchasing an mp3 player here if I can get this repaired/replaced for a reasonable price.

I know Apple doesn’t support water damage (be it accidental, on purpose, or by force of mother nature) and I’m still under factory warranty, so please, I just need some help trying to get this taken care of. If any one has any advice on what I should do, I would greatly appreciate it. Could I just pay $200 again for an out of warranty replacement (due to water damage)? Is that replacement a new iPhone? Am I able to keep my same phone number? Do I have to pay any kind of penalty fee to AT&T/Apple? I just really need to know what I can do because I haven’t voided any part of my contract with AT&T. I’m just worried/curious. Thank you for anything. I apologize for the long post but I needed to explain everything clearly. Thanks.

With the discontinuation of the unlimited iphone data plans there has been a lot of talk that if you swap the sim card out of your iphone into another phone that you will lose you unlimited data package.  Does anyone know if this is true?   I have an iphone with the unlimited data plan and sometimes I like to swap my sim card out into an old Razr when I am going someplace that I don’t want to take my iphone such as mountain biking or on roller coasters.  I just want to make sure that I can continue to do this without losing my unlimited data plan for the iphone since to my understanding there is absolutely no way of getting it back once it has been changed.   thanks.

So i was on facebook a few hours ago and saw this post from AT&T.   Yesterday’s iPhone 4 pre-order numbers are in, and they are 10 times higher than the first day of pre-ordering the iPhone 3G S last year!! Yesterday also set a new record for the number of customers visiting att.com to check eligibility (over 13 million!) Given the unprecedented demand for iPhone 4, as of today we are suspending pre-ordering to fulfill the orders that we’ve already received. We will keep you all posted on when pre-orders will resume. Keep in mind, as long as you received a confirmation number at the end of your order, you’re all set.   So my understanding is that if you have a confirmation number/confirmation email, that you will receive your phone on the 24th? Should i be thinking differently?  I had my friend who works at AT&T order me a phone and when i check the order status it says In Progress and that the order was placed on 6/15.  I know some people are saying if you received your confirmation email after the 1:30PT deadline, that you wont be getting your phone on the 24th.  Any truth to this matter?

On June 15, is it possible to order an iphone 4g via the web for in-store pick up on the 24th? My understanding is that this is not the case, but it does not make make sense to me. It would seem that the store and customer would benefit from this option. Can anyone clarify if my understanding is correct?

I’m currently with ATT and I am an IPHONE customer, as well as, have ATT as my home phone and internet provider. Myself, like many other IPHONE useres have always wondered why we are unable to use our IPHONES as a modem to connect to our laptops, like Verizon does. I used to be with Verizon and I had the Palm Treo and the HTC Tilt and I was able to tether both phones as a modem to connect to the internet on my laptop. No seperate date plans or direct connect adapters. Now, it’s my understanding that if you are able to jailbreak your IPHONE, this feature is available. So, that means that the IPHONE is capable of tethering. My understanding is that ATT’s network is unable to handle the additional demand to it’s network. Even do, they have enjoyed considerable success and profit since offering the IPHONE. They keep promising to offer this function in the near future but still nothing. Now, the rumbling of Verizon also offering the IPHONE has become louder and louder. I have no doubt that if Verizon does start to offer the IPHONE that they will allow tethering with thier network. This leaves many ATT IPHONE users in a dilema. Stay with ATT and hope that they come through with their promise of tethering or go with Verizon, who is sure to offer tethering. I hope ATT pays close attention to what their customers are saying and these posting on these boards. I must say that other than that one issue, I have been very happy with my service with ATT but, if they take much longer with allowing tethering and Verizon, if and when they start offering the IPHONE, does, I will have to seriously consider changing my cell phone service.

Hello, My name is Edo, about six months ago I have purchased an iPhone 3g (8gb) from ebay, it was from someone in the U.S. (locked to AT&T) and because the iPhone hasn’t been officialy sold here until 2 days ago I had to unlock it by “illegal” means.   I am still using it fully unlocked but I would like to activate it through apple and have everything completely legal. To my understanding, I need AT&T to allow the phone to be activated with my service provider’s (Cellcom, who do sell the iPhone here) SIM , I’m not too familiar with how, I just need someone in AT&T who has the option to do it to tell me exactly what to do in order to activate it here.   In conclusion, thanks for your help, please contact me if possible throgh e-mail in order to activate my iPhone here in Israel.
