Unlocked iPhone 3G, can I use prepaid?

Hi, i'm sorry if this has been answered somewhere before. I did a bit of searching and couldn't find anything that quite related to my situation, so here's the deal:   I'm from Australia, and prepaid plans over there are ridiculously easier to get my head around compared to here. Basically, all you do over there is choose your provider of choice, a dollar figure of credit (to go towards calls, texts, and data) and you can put the SIM card in any device that will allow that carrier. Point in case, I unlocked my iPhone 3G LEGITIMATELY through my original provider, and started using a prepaid service on it instead. Worked a treat.   Fast forward to now where i'm in the USA, I have friends on AT&T and I know they are the original iPhone carriers, so to me this says they are the best option to go with. I decided to try purchasing a Go Phone prepaid to see if it would work. I activated the SIM in the cheap little phone that came with it, and once I had confirmed that credit had been applied to it as well, I put the SIM in my unlocked iPhone 3G, with no joy. It did not seem to detect any usable carrier and after a while of searching came up with "No Service".   International roaming charges are expensive, and I have service through AT&T with data and everything whilst i'm using my active roaming service, which tells me that the iPhone 3G itself will work as long as I can get an appropriate plan.      So my question to you, given my situation, what are my options for getting a prepaid SIM card that I can use with my unlocked iPhone 3G? Going on a post pay is really not an option for me, and I would prefer to avoid jailbreaking the device given I have gone out of my way to keep it legit, so if anyone can shed some light on what I need to do to actually use my iPhone 3G, I'd be hugely appreciative.   Thank you!

TMobile SIM card in an iPhone?

A friend of mine has the G1 for TMobile, and asked me if her SIM card will work in an unlocked iPhone.  Would this work at all?  Does the iPhone have to be Jailbroken as well as Unlocked in order for it to be able to access TMobile's network, or does it just have to be Unlocked?  What about the updates, when Apple avails new firmware for the iPhone, will the TMobile SIM card in the iPhone still work or not?  Is there any way to make this work for her?
