Rumor: Multitasking coming to iPhone OS 4.0

Sorry, that was just my excited utterance upon reading Thursday morning's AppleInsider story about iPhone OS 4.0 . It cites "people with a proven track record" in claiming that multitasking will finally make its debut. Multitasking, of course, refers to the operating system's ability to run more than one app at a time and let you switch between them at will, just like you can do in Windows, Mac OS, Android, Palm WebOS, and just about every other OS on the planet--mobile or otherwise. The iPhone OS currently offers limited multitasking: You can listen to music while, say, reading a book, and keep a phone call active while browsing in Safari, but that's about it. According to AppleInsider's sources, "Apple plans to deliver a multitasking manager that leverages interface technology already bundled with its Mac OS X operating system." Sounds good to me. Of course, only Apple knows if, when, and how that will be implemented. Personally, I just want a way to organize my ever-increasing app library--though hopefully that will go hand-in-hand with whatever interface changes bring multitasking. How about you? Are you champing at the bit for this long-overdue feature, or do you have other items on your wish list? While you're mulling that over (and writing up insightful comments), check out David Carnoy's iPhone 4G: 25 most-wanted features . Hopefully we won't have to wait long for at least some of them. http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-19512_7-10467752-233.html?tag=TOCmoreStories.0

Two Questions for IPhone – Finding my IMAP & SMTP Address & Transferring Songs

Where would I find my IMAP and SMTP address on my computer? I have a HP Media Center PC with Windows 7 installed, using a Wildblue Modem with a SysLink Router (wireless) I would need this info to input into my IPhone 3Gs to get my Email's coming to my phone, Thanks for any help in this matter.   2nd Question - I also have an IPhone 3G for the Wife that has over 2,000 songs, how can I transfer them over to my new phone from my older one?  I did back up my 3G on my Computer and that when well, but I could not transfer them back to the newer IPhone.  Plus I lost all my Contacts, Calander info for appointments or any of the App's I had.  The Att&T Rep's said if I had my Old Phone Uploaded to my Main Computer at Home, they would show up when I SYNC my new IPhone with my Home Computer.   EIther I did something wrong, THey show up on my Itune page's and my songs are also showing up, but not transferring.  Any help in this area would be great, since I am lost.   Have a Great New Years.

Build without an SDK, test without a device

How many SDKs do I need? Which SDK is best for me? For a newcomer to the Symbian development world those are among the first questions asked. There are many S60 SDKs on offer, some with feature packs and plugins, some with compiler specific binaries and on top of that many plug-ins. Quite a lot to handle and figure out and nobody likes having all possible SDKs installed. So what will happen now that Qt is added to the picture? I can design my app using Qt for Windows (or Linux, or Mac) and, according to the "code once, compile anywhere" promise I should be able now to compile this application for Symbian and Maemo devices, with minimal changes. But that means that now I need to install at least one Symbian SDK for building, or a Maemo one, and I should have at least one smartphone for testing. Or do I? Yes, probably one will have an SDK installed and use its emulator for testing some really complicated solutions, with Symbian components part of the design. And yes, nothing can really replace hand-on-testing. But for simple use cases and for getting started trials one possible solution could be building and testing in the cloud. What you need is an IDE plugin, web hosted SDK and build tools and Forum Nokia's Remote Device Access solution, all mixed together in a rather simple build, deploy and test solution. Here's a live demo (boring parts speeded-up a bit) of such a solution:

I don’t need a WM device anymore.

I no longer need the windows applications, but have a question:  Will the iphone and my laptop sync my calendar and contacts?  Presently I use MS Office 2007 on my laptop with Outlook for my calendar and contacts.  What do you use on an iPhone, if anything.

Doppler808 – AT&T Resident Shill

What kickbacks do they give you for hyping up AT&T fanboi?  You spout more abuse on this forum than anyone, your attitude is "If you don't like it, leave", never anything to encourage improvement of AT&T service...   So let's hear your qualifications fanboi, got a degree from UOP in Windows 98?  Or an honorary doctorate from AT&T university?

Questions about Outlook 2007 and Syncing with New Iphone 3gs

I have the Tilt (HTC 8925) now. Thinking the new 3gs might just work for me now. My question is I have read of some problems with syncing with Outlook 2007 calendar and contacts. Despite the problems with Windows, Outlook is the best Windows product I have ever used and I want to keep using it with the Iphone. If I can be somewhat assured that I shouldn't have any problems with Outlook 2007, I might just take the Iphone plunge. I have read on how to make it work, but I still see where some are having problems. Any comments from anyone with their experience with the new 3.0 system and Outlook 2007? Thanks!!

How To Convert Videos For Creative Players (And Most Anything Else)

Go here and download the best darn FREE file converter that can pretty much convert to anything you can think of. Install it. Start it. ONE - Click on "All To Mobile Device". TWO - This screen will pop up. In the drop down, find Apple iPhone & iPod, and choose the screen res that matches your orientation desire. 480x320 is for landscape viewing, 320x480 is for portrait viewing. THREE - This screen will appear. Find your file and drag and drop it into the box. Or you can browse for it. But dragging and dropping is much easier. FOUR - Choose your output folder if necessary at the bottom, then click "Okay" in the upper right hand corner. FIVE - Back to this screen. Choose your output if you didn't in step four. Then click the "Start" button. SIX - Watch your video convert. Time will vary depending on your computer's processor, what else you're doing, how long the video is, the settings you chose to convert it with, etc. (a ripped AVI movie file that is approximately 800MB and about 1 and 1/2 hours long will convert for me in about 10-15 minutes, running on an Intel Core 2 Quad CPU Q6600 @ 2.40 GHz 2.39 GHz with 2 Gigs of RAM, running Windows Vista 32 Bit . Make your estimations from that). SEVEN - Put the video onto your player by putting it in whatever folder you want, and then go to iTunes and either from the videos or music section, choose to open a new file and browse to whereever you just saved that file. Or just drag it and drop it onto either the music or video portion of iTunes. Then from the iPhone/iTouch section, go to the video tab and checkmark that video. EIGHT - ENJOY! Disclaimer - Yes, I realize that I'm re-encoding an MP4. This is because a file I had already converted was the only file I had on hand. I figured that I'd squash this bug before someone asked why I was converting an MP4 into an MP4. ONE TWO THREE FOUR FIVE SIX SEVEN NO PICTURE EIGHT

Tethering on iPhone

I know this horse has probably been beaten to death but after a search I was not able to find the information anywhere.   Why is it that phones with Windows Mobile on the AT&T Network can tether without any additional charges using Internet Connection Sharing... yet the iPhone, which has the capability to do (ref: OS3.0 beta), is not allowed to tether without jailbreaking?   The sticky at the top of the forum still says "late summer" and it's already fall. Can we get that sticky updated?   Is it really, as I've read all over the Internet, AT&T's belief that their network is unable to support the "supposed" increase in traffic?
